Gladiator. Reprising Her Role

Connie Nielsen will reprise her role as Lucilla, Roman princess turned influential senator. Now an elderly empress, Lucilla has maintained power in Rome for decades since the death of villainous Emperor Commodus at the end of the first film. The plot reportedly focuses on her efforts to keep the empire from crumbling due to corruption and infighting.

Lucilla will be joined by her son, Alexander, played by hot young Irish actor Paul Mescal. Alexander has grown up orphaned by the events of the original but still lives in the shadow of the great warrior-turned-gladiator who was revealed to be his father, Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe).

Maximus died avenging himself against Commodus at the end of Gladiator, achieving legendary status. But Scott has suggested Crowe may return for cameo flashbacks or visions guiding Alexander.

Top Cast of Gladiator 2

Flanking Lucilla as an elder senator and mentor will be Denzel Washington, the biggest name among several high-wattage newcomers to the cast. Breakout stars Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn will play key Praetorian Guards, the imperial bodyguards turned kingmakers in 2nd century Rome.

Matt Lucas takes on the role of an obsequious, scheming senator not unlike his prior turns in Alice in Wonderland and Bridesmaids. Rounding out the Roman cast are Derek Jacobi reprising his role as Senator Gracchus and a host of gritty character actors playing Roman soldiers and politicians.

On the barbarian side, Scottish actor Fred Hechinger and May Calamawy will play leaders of the forces threatening Rome’s northern borders. Joining them will be action veterans like Peter Mensah as well as Thai martial artists Lior Raz and Mike Parish.

The Action & Intrigue Fans Want

With Scott’s masterful direction and a reported budget of over $300 million, expect visceral battles on par with films like Gladiator and Scott’s other epics like Kingdom of Heaven. The script comes from David Scarpa, who penned Scott’s 2017 kidnapping drama All the Money in the World ̧ so expect simmering political intrigue behind all the spectacle.

As Lucilla and Alexander struggle to hold power and repel barbarian hordes, there should be enough juicy conflicts and fight scenes to satisfy fans old and new. Scott is pulling out all the stops with massive sets, thousands of costumes and weapons, and the latest in CGI wizardry. All will be on display as he revisits Ancient Rome and brings back the magic and atmosphere that made his original vision so transporting.

If Gladiator 2 fulfills its mighty promise, it could stand alongside Ben-Hur and Spartacus in the pantheon of classic Hollywood epics. See if Ridley Scott can capture lightning in a bottle one more time when the movie debuts in November 2024.
