Avengers: Secret Wars movie review
The climactic film in Marvel’s Multiversal Saga finally has a name – Avengers: Secret Wars. Set to hit theaters on November 7, 2027, this epic blockbuster promises to be the biggest Avengers movie yet, combining characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and multiple dimensions into one massive, reality-bending storyline. Based on the iconic 1980s Marvel crossover comic, Secret Wars looks to deeply explore the MCU multiverse while posing an extinction-level threat to all of existence.
Release date: May 7, 2027 (USA)
After years of buildup, Marvel fans finally have a concrete release date to look forward to with Avengers: Secret Wars. This places the film in Phase 6, making it the culmination of The Multiverse Saga which began with Phase 4’s WandaVision in 2021. Leading up to Secret Wars, the Phase 6 slate includes Fantastic Four, Avengers: Kang Dynasty, Captain America 4, and more. We can expect major multiverse aftermath from Phase 5 titles like Ant-Man 3 and Loki Season 2 to directly set up events in the new Avengers story.
Producer: Kevin Feige
As always, Marvel Studios president and producer extraordinaire Kevin Feige is overseeing this ambitious project. Feige has produced every MCU film to date, guiding the record-breaking 23-film Infinity Saga. Now he takes the reins on Phase 6 and the Multiverse Saga finale with Secret Wars. Working with Feige is director Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed 2021 critical and fan favorite Shang-Chi.
Screenplay: Michael Waldron
Heading up the screenplay is Waldron, who previously wrote the excellent Loki Disney+ series. That show tackled complex time and multiverse concepts with wit and emotional resonance. Fans should be thrilled to see Waldron’s talent for sharp dialogue and layered characters applied to Marvel’s grand multiverse adventure. Given Dr. Strange’s central role in unleashing the multiverse, Waldron’s perspective is invaluable.
Story by: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby
The Secret Wars comic storyline came from the brilliant minds of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1984. Now their wild ideas are coming to life in live action, no doubt with creative tweaks and updates from Waldron. Nonetheless, this will be a loving adaptation true to the spirit of that revolutionary crossover comic. Fittingly, Secret Wars promises to revolutionize the MCU and push it in brave new directions.
The Secret Wars comic centered on the all-powerful Beyonder transporting Earth’s heroes and villains to an artificial Battleworld planet, where they fight for survival and their deepest wishes. Heroes meet alternate universe versions of themselves, while factions form between overlapping universes.
The MCU stage is perfectly set for a similar reality-bending showdown. Phase 4 ended with infinite universes colliding, including sinister variants like Superior Iron Man and zombie heroes. Now Kang the Conqueror descends with his ruthless multiversal army. Doctor Strange, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and more will unite across multiverses in a truly epic ensemble.
The first act likely deals with Kang’s invasion and the unfolding reality crisis. The second act could mirror the comics by taking key heroes and villains to a Battleworld-type environment. There, characters like T’Challa Star-Lord, Party Thor, Captain Carter, and others meet our familiar Avengers. Before the third act, a pivotal betrayal might fracture the alliance. Finally, the grand climax will involve desperate last stands, sacrifices, and unity to preserve the imperiled multiverse.
After years of earned buildup, Avengers: Secret Wars has all the ingredients to deliver a genre-redefining comic book movie event for the ages. The wait until November 2027 will be excruciating. But based on Feige and Waldron’s stellar track record, this Secret Wars looks worth the wait and sure to exceed cosmic expectations. When the fate of the known multiverse hangs in the balance, we can expect shocks, suspense and surprises right up to the final, reality-shattering frame.
