The latest addition to the action thriller genre is One Ranger, released in theaters last May. Directed by Jesse V. Johnson and starring Thomas Jane, this film attempts to put a modern spin on the legendary Texas Ranger. The story follows a rugged Ranger who joins forces with British authorities to stop a devastating terrorist attack.
One Ranger takes place primarily across Texas and London. We first meet Ranger Samuel Reed (played by Jane) as he tracks an escaped convict through the harsh desert landscape. In the opening action sequence, Reed faces off against the criminal in an intense hand-to-hand battle atop a speeding train. This gritty fight sets the tone for the hard-hitting action to come.
Shortly after, Reed returns home only to find a team of MI6 agents, led by operative Emily Stone (Dominique Tipper), waiting for him. Stone reveals a ominous terrorist plot and requests Reed’s assistance in stopping the attack in London. After some convincing, the lone wolf Ranger heads overseas to aid the investigation.
What follows is a tense cat and mouse game, as Reed and Stone chase leads across England to uncover the sinister plot. Director Johnson keeps the story moving briskly while staging slick action sequences along the way. We get gritty street fights, high-octane car chases, and a hair-raising extraction scene that has Reed and Stone fleeing by helicopter.
At the center of it all is Thomas Jane in the role of Ranger Reed. Jane looks convincing as a rugged, no-nonsense lawman who prefers using his fists over firearms. He brings a commanding physical presence along with some emotional depth, having lost his family years prior. Tipper also shines as MI6 agent Stone, matching Jane in both witty banter and action choreography during intense fight scenes.
In the climax, Reed faces off solo against the terrorist leader in an epic confrontation at London Bridge. This final action scene brings One Ranger to a thrilling yet predictable conclusion. In the end, Reed saves the city in true Texas Ranger fashion.
With One Ranger, director Jesse Johnson delivers an entertaining action thriller centered around a lone lawman facing terrorists in a foreign land. The story fits squarely within the genre, but is elevated by slick action sequences and strong lead performances. Thomas Jane steps convincingly into the Ranger role, while trading barbs and punches with an equally up-to-the-task Dominique Tipper.
I give One Ranger 3 out of 5 stars. It succeeds as a gritty action flick carried by its charismatic leads. But the script leaves some things to be desired, with a fairly routine plot and some clichéd characterizations. However, action movie fans will find plenty to enjoy in this fast-paced Lone Star gunslinger tale. It tips its cowboy hat just enough to tradition before unleashing more fist-flying action.
