Why Meghan and Harry Lost Favor
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were once held in high regard by the public, seen as a refreshing modern couple bringing change to the British monarchy. However, opinions have soured after a series of perceived betrayals, hypocrisy, and self-promotion.
The Turning Tide of Public Opinion
According to U.S. journalist Lee Cohen, “People on both sides of the Atlantic are overwhelmingly, completely fed up with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s betrayals, disloyal hypocrisy, and self-promotion.” The public is disgusted by the couple’s self-aggrandizement and lofty claims, despite accomplishing little substance since stepping back from royal duties.
The Last Straw: Betraying the Queen
The final straw for many was when Prince Harry aired grievances against the royal family in interviews, seen as a profound betrayal of trust and duty. As former President Donald Trump stated, “He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable.” Many believe Prince Harry failed to show due respect and gratitude to his grandmother and monarch who supported him his entire life.
The Hubris of a Poisonous Pair
What particularly galls people is Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s sense of entitlement and hubris. Despite abandoning their roles, they still use their royal titles for commercial gain through lucrative media deals and interviews. All while doing little to justify their self-proclaimed status as global influencers for social change.
As President Trump said, “I wouldn’t protect him. He would be on his own if it was down to me.” The tide of public opinion has indeed turned against the once-popular couple. Their credibility diminished through their self-serving actions, perhaps permanently so.
The Path Forward
While the damage may already be done, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could potentially rehabilitate their image by focusing more on service over self-promotion. Of course, earning back trust takes time, requiring sincere self-reflection and changed behaviors. Ultimately, actions speak louder than words or lofty claims.
If the couple stays in the public eye and wants to restore their reputation, reaching out to bridge divides would be far better than settling personal scores at the expense of duty. Otherwise, the one-time “royal rebels” may find their popularity in permanent exile.
