Squid Game took the world by storm when it premiered on Netflix in September 2021, becoming the streaming giant’s most watched series ever. The Korean survival drama tells the story of 456 financially struggling people who compete in deadly children’s games for a huge cash prize. The intense show captivated audiences and left them eager for more – namely, Squid Game season 2.

In an interview with Deadline, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed Gi-hun will be back “and he will do something for the world,” which suggests the new season may expand beyond the private games teased at the end of season 1.
Another prominent returning character will be the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), leader of the red jumpsuit-wearing masked guards. In a shocking twist, season 1 revealed that the Front Man was actually Hwang In-ho, the missing police detective brother of player Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun). Season 2 will likely explore this backstory further and the brothers’ future conflict.
As for Jun-ho himself, his fate remains ambiguous after he was shot trying to escape the island games site. But Dong-hyuk said season 2 will provide answers on “whether Jun-ho is alive or dead.”
Other cast members fans hope will reprise their roles include Islamic moneylender Abdul Ali (Anupam Tripathi), tough guy gangster Jang Deok-su (Heo Sung-tae), and elderly player Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo), who turned out to be the games’ secret mastermind. In the finale’s shocking twist, Gi-hun discovered that the Front Man was his old friend In-ho behind the mask. Instead of boarding his plane to visit his daughter, Gi-hun turned around with a newly defiant look on his face, suggesting he had vengeance planned.
But who exactly might Gi-hun be targeting for revenge? It could be his former friend In-ho, the shadowy games organizers, or even the wealthy VIPs placing bets on the carnage.
Some fans theorize Gi-hun may pretend to be a new player in the games again or infiltrate them somehow to take the operation down. But that could come with a deadly price when the kidnappers and guards recognize his face.
No matter what course a potential season 2 takes, it’s bound to be just as intense, emotional, and action-packed as the first run of episodes. After the global success of season 1, Netflix is surely invested in making sure any follow-up delivers on fans’ high expectations.
The creative team seems to already have plenty of inspiration for where things could go story-wise next.
