The Taylor Swift Eras Tour is coming to schools, with courses offered by Harvard and the University of Florida.
Along with many other universities, Harvard and the University of Florida are examining pop culture through the prism of Taylor Swift.
In 2024, Taylor Swift will visit Cambridge and Gainesville. No, college classes instead of additional dates for the Eras Tour. Harvard University and the University of Florida (UF) have both announced new Swift courses for 2024.
Poet, critic, and lecturer Stephanie Burt will teach “Taylor Swift and Her World” at Harvard. Melina Jimenez will be teaching “Musical Storytelling with Taylor Swift and other iconic female artists” at UF. Swift’s discography, “her evergreen songwriting,” and historical musicians will all be covered in-depth in the UF course, like Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, and Dolly Parton.
These educational institutions are by no means the first to examine Swift’s lyrics and cultural influence; she is without a doubt one of the most important artists working today. Along with releasing albums and songs that reach the top of the charts, she is also breaking box office records, influencing local economies in the communities where her Eras Tour stops, and even attracting new fans to the NFL. That only applies till 2023.
Ghent University in Belgium, the University of Texas at Austin,
Rice University, Berklee College of Music, the University of California at Berkeley, Arizona State, New York University, Stanford, and the University of California at Berkeley are among the other universities that provide courses on Swift, Swifties, and culture.
Although they vary, those classes typically begin with a dissection of Swift’s writings in order to introduce students to critique, analysis, and more general cultural touchstones and themes. According to the Harvard Crimson, Burt’s course at Harvard will examine how Swift’s writing interacts with the canon of literature, incorporating readings from authors like Willa Cather and William Wordsworth. Burt told the Crimson, We are fortunate enough to be living in an era when one of our major artists is also one of the most famous people on the planet.” “What prevents you from offering a course on that?
Examining modern popular culture is by no means unrelated to scholarly pursuits. There are Harry Styles classes at Texas State University and Nicki Minaj classes at UC Berkley. and San Diego State has offered a course on Bad Bunny. And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg.
